SCANN PROJECT
NAKURU, KENYA
The Security Fence and Bio Gas Stove Project will benefit the Street Children Assistance Network of Nakuru (SCANN). SCANN is a local charitable foundation in Nakuru, Kenya that was created to provide education, food, shelter, medical care and 24 hour support for abandoned and orphaned children (ages 3 to 18) who live on the streets of Nakuru. The mission of SCANN is to alleviate the extreme hardships faced by street children and rehabilitate them with the goal of turning them into useful and contributing members of their community and society.
The project is the construction of a security fence and bio gas stove at the SCANN compound. Not only will the fence provide safety to the children and staff, but it will help stop the theft of over 30% of the vegetables cultivated to be consumed by SCANN children for their daily meals. Nutrition is very important for the children and the bio gas stove will allow the food grown by the children to be made into meals for their daily consumption. Presently, all of their cooking is done with Firewood – over the last 6 years they have managed to get firewood from various donors. However changes in Government regulations and scarcity of Timber are now forcing them to pay for some of it and in the future it will definitely get more expensive and more scarce. The staple diet in Kenya is Ugali (Maize or Corn Flour boiled in water and stirred vigorously). This is served with Sukuma Wiki (like Spinach – the cheapest Meal available) or Mince (Ground) Beef Stew. This project will provide significant savings to SCANN's limited funds as the organization loses significant resources on an ongoing basis. The estimated time to complete the project is six months. Eligibility of this project has been confirmed by RI.
